OpenAI Data Scientist Interview Questions (2026)
4 min read10 practice questionsUpdated Sep 29, 2026
OpenAI's data scientist interview follows the stages OpenAI publishes for every role: a résumé review, an introductory call, one or more skills-based assessments, then 4–6 hours of final interviews with 4–6 people, virtual by default. The current Product, Codex and Safety postings ask for fluent SQL and Python, experiment design and causal inference, north-star metrics, and A/B tests on model and product changes. The ten questions below cover that work, each with what the interviewer is checking and how to answer.

- $230K–$385K plus equity on the Product and Codex postings; $265K–$380K on Safety (checked Sep 29, 2026).
- What it tests
- SQL and Python, A/B tests on model and product changes, causal inference, north-star metrics, and safety trade-offs.
The OpenAI Data Scientist Interview Process
What to expect at each stage of the OpenAI Data Scientist loop.
- 1
Application and résumé review
About 1 weekOpenAI says the recruiting team typically takes one week to review your résumé and email you back.
- 2
Introductory call
A conversation with the hiring manager or a recruiter about your work and academic experience, motivations and goals.
- 3
Skills-based assessment
OpenAI says formats vary by team and may include pair coding, take-home projects or technical tests, and that some roles have more than one assessment. Ask which one your data science team uses.
- 4
Final interviews
4–6 hours, 1–2 daysTypically 4–6 interviewers, focused on your area of expertise. Virtual by default; you can choose to interview onsite in San Francisco.
- 5
Decision
About 1 weekOpenAI says to expect a decision within a week of the final interviews. Your recruiter may ask for references at this stage.
Sample OpenAI Data Scientist Interview Questions
Cultural Fit Questions
1 question- 1
Tell me about a time you changed your analysis or recommendation after someone challenged it.
What they're checking: Openness to feedback, one of the four things OpenAI's interview guide says it cares about.
“Tell me about yourself”, “Why here?” and the other common questions, and how to prep each →
Behavioral Questions
3 questions- 1
Tell me about a time you identified and addressed bias in a machine learning model
What they're checking: Whether you look for who a model fails, not just its average accuracy, and follow through on a fix.
- 2
Describe a situation where you had to communicate complex ML findings to non-technical stakeholders
What they're checking: Clear communication, which OpenAI's interview guide names, and whether your findings change decisions.
- 3
Walk me through a time when you had to iterate quickly on an experiment under tight deadlines
What they're checking: Speed without sloppiness: what you cut and what you protected.
The six topics behind behavioral questions, and how to prep a story for each →
Product Questions
1 question- 1
Define the north-star metric for a ChatGPT feature, and the guardrails you'd put around it.
What they're checking: Metric design from the user's goal down. The Product posting expects you to define north-star metrics.
Technical Questions
5 questions- 1
A new model version is rolling out in ChatGPT. Design the A/B test to measure its impact on users.
SeniorWhat they're checking: Experiment design for model changes, which the Product posting describes directly.
- 2
Design a staged rollout for a new coding model in Codex. What would make you stop it?
SeniorWhat they're checking: Staged-rollout judgment, which the Codex posting lists alongside A/B tests.
- 3
A safety classifier's false positives are frustrating users. How would you quantify the trade-off against false negatives and choose a threshold?
SeniorWhat they're checking: Explicit cost reasoning about both error types. The Safety posting asks you to quantify and navigate this trade-off.
- 4
A feature launched to every user at once. How would you estimate its effect?
What they're checking: Causal inference without a randomized test. The Codex posting asks for comfort with causal inference.
- 5
Write a query to compute weekly retention by signup cohort, then explain how you'd check it's right.
What they're checking: Fluent SQL, which the Codex posting asks for, plus the habit of validating your own output.

Preparation Tips for OpenAI Data Scientist Interviews
- Read OpenAI's interview guide; it lists the stages and says AI-tool rules differ by interview
- Practice SQL and Python until you're fluent under time pressure; the Codex posting asks for both
- Prepare to design A/B tests and staged rollouts for model changes, including novelty effects and stop criteria
- Practice reasoning about false positives versus false negatives with explicit costs
- Read your team's posting and prepare one example for each responsibility it lists
- Ask your recruiter what the skills-based assessment involves for your team
Frequently Asked Questions - OpenAI Data Scientist
OpenAI publishes one set of stages for all roles: application and résumé review (about a week), introductory calls with a recruiter or the hiring manager, a skills-based assessment whose format varies by team, final interviews of 4–6 hours with 4–6 people over one or two days, and a decision within about a week. OpenAI doesn't publish a data-science-specific assessment, so ask your recruiter whether yours is a take-home, a live SQL or Python exercise, or both.
When checked on September 29, 2026, the Data Scientist, Product and Data Scientist, Codex postings each listed $230K–$385K, and Data Scientist, Safety listed $265K–$380K. All three are based in San Francisco and note that the role offers equity. Ask your recruiter where your level sits in the range.
The Codex posting asks for "fluency in SQL and Python; comfort with experiment design and causal inference." The Product posting expects you to "define our north-star metrics, design A/B tests, and establish source-of-truth dashboards." The Safety posting adds quantifying false positive and false negative trade-offs in safety and integrity systems.
Data scientists are hired into specific teams. OpenAI's job board in September 2026 listed data science roles for Product, Codex, Safety, Business, Infrastructure, Platform and B2B Products, Preparedness, Core Experimentation, and Ads Demand, among others. The questions you get will lean toward your team's decisions, so read the posting's responsibilities closely.
It depends on the interview. OpenAI's interview guide says some formats intentionally allow AI tools while others assess your independent problem-solving without them. Your preparation materials will say what's allowed; if they don't, ask your recruiter before the interview.
Interviews are virtual by default, but the roles are office-based. The Product and Codex postings describe a hybrid model of three days a week in the office, with relocation assistance for new employees.
