Anthropic Fullstack Engineer Interview Questions (2026)

4 min read10 practice questionsUpdated Sep 29, 2026

Anthropic's full-stack engineer interviews run over Google Meet, with live coding in tools such as CodeSignal or Colab where you can look things up but get no AI help unless you're told otherwise. Anthropic doesn't publish the rounds for full-stack roles, and you're placed on a team after the interviews. The postings ask for years of shipping user-facing products across the stack, Python plus React or TypeScript, and the judgment to decide what to build when Claude writes much of the code. The ten questions below cover that, each with what it checks and how to answer.

Sample Anthropic Fullstack Engineer Interview Questions

Cultural Fit Questions

1 question
  1. 1

Claude writes a lot of the code Anthropic commits. What do you contribute when typing isn't the bottleneck?
    Mid-level

What they're checking: Whether you see your value in judgment and taste, as the Reinforcement Learning posting puts it, rather than output volume.

Behavioral Questions

3 questions
  1. 1

Tell me about a time you had to balance competing technical requirements while maintaining high quality standards
    Senior

What they're checking: How you make trade-offs under pressure, and whether you protect the parts of quality that matter.

  2. 2

Tell me about a user-facing product you led across the full stack, from design to launch.
    Senior

What they're checking: End-to-end ownership. The Senior posting asks for someone who has led the design and delivery of complex user-facing products.

  3. 3

Walk me through a time when you had to collaborate with researchers or non-technical stakeholders
    Mid-level

What they're checking: Whether you can build for people whose needs change fast. The Reinforcement Learning posting stresses reacting "to what researchers need next."

Product Questions

1 question
  1. 1

Design a developer onboarding flow for the Anthropic API that maximizes adoption.
    Senior

What they're checking: Product sense for developers: time to first successful call, and what happens after.

Technical Questions

3 questions
  1. 1

How would you optimize the performance of a React application that displays streaming AI responses?
    Senior

What they're checking: Practical front-end performance judgment for token-by-token rendering.

  2. 2

Design the client and server state for a chat interface that supports long multi-turn conversations, message edits, and regeneration.
    Senior

What they're checking: Data modeling that survives real product features, not just a message list.

  3. 3

Explain how you'd implement A/B testing for AI-powered features in a conversational interface.
    Senior

What they're checking: Whether you understand what makes experiments on AI features harder than on buttons.

System Design Questions

2 questions
  1. 1

Design a web platform for researchers to create, manage, and quality-review RL environments.
    Senior

What they're checking: Internal-tool design for expert users. This is the work the Reinforcement Learning posting describes.

  2. 2

How would you design the API architecture for Claude.ai to handle millions of conversations?
    Senior

What they're checking: Whether you can scale a streaming API and name where it breaks first.

Preparation Tips for Anthropic Fullstack Engineer Interviews

  • Practice coding in a plain browser editor with no AI assistance; live interviews don't allow it unless you're told otherwise
  • Prepare one product you led across the full stack, with the architecture, the hardest decision, and results after launch
  • Be ready to talk through streaming UI, conversation state, and latency for chat interfaces
  • Tell your recruiter which product areas interest you; placement happens after the interviews
  • Prepare an example of building for fast-changing internal users, such as researchers or operators
  • Write your application's first draft yourself; Anthropic allows Claude only to refine it

Frequently Asked Questions - Anthropic Fullstack Engineer

Anthropic doesn't publish the rounds for full-stack roles, and the postings don't list them. Its careers page says all interviews run over Google Meet, technical roles use live coding tools like Colab and CodeSignal, and interviewers ask about your experience and what motivates you. The product full-stack postings add that team placement happens after the interview process. Ask your recruiter for the stages and which languages you can use.

When checked on September 29, 2026, the Senior Software Engineer, Full-stack posting listed an annual salary of $320,000, and Staff+ Software Engineer, Full-stack listed $405,000–$485,000; both list San Francisco, New York City and Seattle. Full-Stack Software Engineer, Reinforcement Learning listed $300,000–$405,000 in San Francisco and New York City. Ask your recruiter how the range applies at your level.

The Senior posting asks for at least six years of full-stack experience and a record of leading "the design and delivery of complex, consumer or B2B user-facing products across the full stack." The Reinforcement Learning posting asks for Python and "a modern web stack (React, TypeScript, or similar)," and describes building web platforms for RL environment creation, management, and quality review.

Not for the product full-stack roles. Both postings say team placement happens after the interview process, "taking into account your interests and experience alongside organizational needs." Tell your recruiter early which product areas interest you. The Reinforcement Learning role is posted for a specific team.

Not in live interviews unless you're told otherwise; Anthropic's candidate guidance says they're "all you–no AI assistance." That holds even though the Reinforcement Learning posting says "Claude writes a lot of the code we commit." Take-home work is also done without Claude unless the instructions allow it. You can use Claude to research Anthropic and practice beforehand.

No. The postings say Anthropic currently expects all staff to be in one of its offices at least 25% of the time. The careers page adds that most staff are in the Bay Area and come to the office regularly, while some who live further away come in for one week a month.
