OpenAI Research Scientist Interview Questions (2026)

4 min read10 practice questionsUpdated Sep 29, 2026

OpenAI's research scientist interview follows the stages OpenAI publishes for every role: a résumé review, an introductory call, one or more skills-based assessments, then 4–6 hours of final interviews with 4–6 people, virtual by default. The general Research Scientist posting considers you for teams across OpenAI and asks for a track record of new ideas, such as first-author work, and the ability to own a research agenda. The ten questions below cover that, each with what the interviewer is checking and how to answer.

The OpenAI Research Scientist Interview Process

What to expect at each stage of the OpenAI Research Scientist loop.

  1. 1

    Application and résumé review

    About 1 week

OpenAI says the recruiting team typically takes one week to review your résumé and email you back.

  2. 2

    Introductory call

A conversation with the hiring manager or a recruiter about your work and academic experience, motivations and goals.

  3. 3

    Skills-based assessment

OpenAI says formats vary by team and may include pair coding, take-home projects or technical tests, and that some roles have more than one assessment.

  4. 4

    Final interviews

    4–6 hours, 1–2 days

Typically 4–6 interviewers, focused on your area of expertise and designed to stretch you. Virtual by default; you can choose to interview onsite in San Francisco.

  5. 5

    Decision

    About 1 week

OpenAI says to expect a decision within a week of the final interviews. Your recruiter may ask for references at this stage.

Sample OpenAI Research Scientist Interview Questions

Cultural Fit Questions

1 question
  1. 1

Tell me about a time a collaborator's or reviewer's critique changed the direction of your research.

What they're checking: Openness to feedback, one of the four things OpenAI's interview guide says it cares about.

“Tell me about yourself”, “Why here?” and the other common questions, and how to prep each →

Behavioral Questions

3 questions
  1. 1

Tell me about a research project where you had to overcome significant technical challenges.

What they're checking: Persistence plus judgment: how you diagnose a blocker and when you change approach.

  2. 2

Tell me about a research agenda you owned: how you chose the problem and kept a long project moving.
    Senior

What they're checking: Research ownership. The Research Scientist posting asks for someone who chooses impactful problems and carries out long-running projects on their own.

  3. 3

Describe a time you collaborated across disciplines to advance a research project.

What they're checking: Collaboration and clear communication, both named in OpenAI's interview guide.

Technical Questions

5 questions
  1. 1

Walk us through an idea of yours that improved on existing ML work. What was new, and how did you show it worked?
    Senior

What they're checking: Originality with evidence, which the posting frames as first-author publications or projects.

  2. 2

Explain how you would design and evaluate a large-scale experiment for fine-tuning a language model.

What they're checking: Experimental discipline at scale. The RL/Reasoning posting prizes "simple experiments in tightly-controlled settings."

  3. 3

How would you evaluate whether an RLHF reward model has been overfit or is exhibiting reward hacking?
    Senior

What they're checking: Whether you know how optimization pressure breaks proxies, and how to detect it.

  4. 4

You join a team with a large ML codebase, and a training run's loss curve looks wrong. How do you debug it?

What they're checking: Hands-on debugging in someone else's code. The RL/Reasoning posting asks for comfort "diving into a large ML codebase to debug and improve it."

  5. 5

What are the key trade-offs between scaling model size vs. improving training efficiency?

What they're checking: Whether you reason about compute budgets quantitatively rather than by slogan.

Case Study Questions

1 question
  1. 1

A pre-training run is showing unexpected capability emergence in a domain you didn't target. How do you decide whether to continue, pause, or publish?
    Senior

What they're checking: Judgment under uncertainty when a result has safety as well as research implications.

Preparation Tips for OpenAI Research Scientist Interviews

  • Read OpenAI's interview guide; it lists the stages and says AI-tool rules differ by interview
  • Prepare one first-author idea to defend in depth: the prior limit, your change, the ablation, and where it fails
  • Read the Charter, recent OpenAI research posts, and the technical reading the interview guide suggests
  • Practice debugging a training run from a loss curve alone, without an assistant
  • Have a view on which team you'd join and what you'd try first there; the general posting considers you for all teams
  • Ask your recruiter what your skills-based assessment involves; OpenAI says formats vary by team

Frequently Asked Questions - OpenAI Research Scientist

OpenAI publishes one set of stages for all roles: application and résumé review (about a week), introductory calls with a recruiter or the hiring manager, a skills-based assessment whose format varies by team, final interviews of 4–6 hours with 4–6 people over one or two days, and a decision within about a week. OpenAI doesn't publish a research-specific loop, so ask your recruiter what the assessment and final interviews cover.

When checked on September 29, 2026, the general Research Scientist posting listed $250K–$445K, Research Engineer/Research Scientist, RL/Reasoning listed $295K–$445K, and Research Engineer / Research Scientist, Personal AGI (Post Training) listed $380K–$500K. All three are in San Francisco and note that the role offers equity. Ask your recruiter how the range maps to your level.

You can do either. The general Research Scientist posting says that by applying "you will be considered for Research Scientist roles across all teams at OpenAI." OpenAI also posts team-specific Research Engineer / Research Scientist roles, such as RL/Reasoning and Post Training, with their own ranges.

The Research Scientist posting asks for "a track record of coming up with new ideas or improving upon existing ideas in machine learning, demonstrated by accomplishments such as first author publications or projects," and the ability to own a research agenda, choosing impactful problems and carrying out long-running projects on your own. The RL/Reasoning posting adds comfort debugging a large ML codebase and a preference for simple, tightly controlled experiments.

It depends on the interview. OpenAI's interview guide says some formats intentionally allow AI tools while others assess your independent problem-solving without them. Your preparation materials will say what's allowed; if they don't, ask your recruiter before the interview.

OpenAI's interview guide recommends its Charter, its research publications and blog posts, and, for technical grounding, the Deep Learning Book and Spinning Up in Deep RL. Beyond that, read the recent papers from the team you're most interested in and have a view on what you would try next.

Interviews are virtual by default, but the roles are based in San Francisco. The RL/Reasoning posting, for example, describes a hybrid schedule of three days a week in the office.
