Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Questions & Process (2026)

4 min read10 practice questionsUpdated Oct 25, 2026

Anthropic doesn't publish a separate interview loop for forward deployed engineers (FDEs). What it does publish: every interview runs on Google Meet, technical roles code live in Colab or CodeSignal, and live interviews allow no AI help unless you're told otherwise. One candidate's March 2026 Glassdoor report describes six stages: a recruiter screen, a hiring-manager call, an agents coding screen, a role-play system design with an imaginary client, Python bug fixing in a notebook, and a culture round. The postings tell you what the loop will probe. FDEs embed with Anthropic's most strategic customers, build production applications with Claude inside the customer's systems, and deliver MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills. They travel to customer sites 25–50% of the time. Unlike the pre-sales Applied AI Architect, an FDE owns the build after the deal. The ten questions below cover that ground, each with what it checks and how to answer.

Sample Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Questions

Cultural Fit Questions

1 question
  1. 1

Anthropic asks its FDEs to champion its mission in the field. What would that look like on a customer engagement where the customer wants to ship faster than you think is safe?

What they're checking: Whether you can hold a safety line with a paying customer without becoming a blocker. The postings ask FDEs to keep "our high standards for safety and reliability" and to be "a champion for Anthropic's mission in the field."

“Tell me about yourself”, “Why here?” and the other common questions, and how to prep each →

Behavioral Questions

3 questions
  1. 1

Tell me about a time you embedded with a customer or partner team and shipped something to production inside their systems.

What they're checking: Hands-on delivery in an environment you don't control. The first responsibility on the posting is to "work within customer systems to build production applications with Claude models."

  2. 2

Tell me about a time you had to decide what to build with very little direction, inside a large or complex organization.

What they're checking: Agency under ambiguity. The postings ask FDEs to "operate autonomously, thrive under ambiguity" and to navigate "ambiguity present in complex organizations."

  3. 3

Tell me about a pattern from one deployment that you turned into something reusable for other teams or customers.

What they're checking: Whether you scale beyond one account. FDEs are asked to "identify and codify repeatable deployment patterns" and feed them back to Product and Engineering.

Product Questions

1 question
  1. 1

What would you send back to Anthropic's Product and Engineering teams after a deployment, and how would you make it useful to them?

What they're checking: Whether field feedback from you would be actionable. FDEs are asked to contribute deployment insights back to Product and Engineering.

Technical Questions

3 questions
  1. 1

Walk me through how you'd build an MCP server that lets Claude work with a customer's internal ticketing system.

What they're checking: Fluency with the artifacts FDEs actually ship. The posting lists "MCP servers, sub-agents, and agent skills that will be used in production workflows."

  2. 2

A customer's Claude agent looks great in demos but fails on about one in five real requests. How do you find out why and fix it?

What they're checking: Evaluation discipline. The London posting asks for production LLM experience including "evaluation frameworks, and deployment at scale."

  3. 3

You're given a working agent loop in Python. Add a tool the model can call, and tell me what you'd optimize next.

What they're checking: Hands-on agent fluency. A March 2026 candidate report describes an agents coding screen that involved "modifying an existing agent loop to add tool calls" and discussing optimization.

System Design Questions

1 question
  1. 1

Design an agent system that reviews loan documents for a bank, working inside legacy systems with strict identity, access and compliance rules.
    Senior

What they're checking: Enterprise system design. The Staff posting asks for a "secure, production-ready design inside a complex enterprise environment of legacy systems, with identity and access, and compliance requirements."

Case Study Questions

1 question
  1. 1

You arrive at a customer with only a business problem: their claims team is overwhelmed. Walk me through your first two weeks.
    Senior

What they're checking: Discovery and problem decomposition. The Staff posting describes walking into "a discovery conversation with only a business problem" and leaving with "a defensible technical strategy."

Preparation Tips for Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer Interviews

  • Prepare one story where you shipped to production inside someone else's systems, with the access, security and handover details, not only the code.
  • Build a small agent with Claude that uses a tool or an MCP server you wrote, and be ready to explain its failure cases and how you measured them.
  • Practice designing for an enterprise with legacy systems: identity and access, audit logging, data handling, and where a human signs off.
  • Rehearse an ambiguous first two weeks at a customer, from shadowing the work to a thin end-to-end version against real data.
  • Live coding is in Colab or CodeSignal and you can look things up, so be quick with Python syntax and the standard library, and practice debugging someone else's code in a notebook.
  • Ask your recruiter whether the role sits on the Applied AI or go-to-market team and which industries it covers, since the postings differ by location and level.

Frequently Asked Questions - Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer

The London posting describes FDEs who "embed directly with our most strategic customers" to build production applications with Claude inside the customer's systems. They deliver MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills, codify repeatable deployment patterns for Anthropic's Product and Engineering teams, and travel to customer sites 25–50% of the time. The Staff posting adds owning the technical strategy for an account and leading work delivered with partners.

Anthropic's Applied AI Architect postings describe a pre-sales role: a technical advisor who helps customers see how Claude fits, builds proofs of concept and develops evals alongside account executives. FDE postings describe embedding with a customer after that and building production systems in their environment, working with Post-Sales, Product and Engineering. If you prefer advising and prototyping, see the Applied AI Architect guide; if you want to own the production build, the FDE role fits.

Anthropic doesn't publish one for FDEs. Its careers page says all interviews run on Google Meet, technical roles use live coding in Colab or CodeSignal, and interviewers ask about your experience and what motivates you. One candidate's Glassdoor report from March 2026, quoted by Scaler, lists six stages: a recruiter screen, a hiring-manager discussion of motivation and experience, an agents coding screen (modifying an existing agent loop to add tool calls), a role-play and ML system-design exercise with an imaginary client, Python bug fixing in a notebook, and a culture-fit round. That's one report, so ask your recruiter for your stages.

When checked on October 25, 2026, the London FDE posting listed an annual salary of £225,000–£255,000, the Staff FDE posting (San Francisco, New York, Seattle) $280,000–$320,000, and the Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering posting in New York $320,000–$405,000. The Paris and Munich FDE postings didn't list a range. Ask your recruiter where your level sits.

It depends on the level. The London FDE posting asks for production experience with LLMs, including agent development and evaluation frameworks. The Staff posting says you don't need to have shipped agents to production, but you do need deep experience building and operating production systems and hands-on time with agents, and it says side projects and prototypes count.

Not in live interviews unless you're told otherwise; Anthropic's candidate guidance says they're "all you–no AI assistance." Take-homes are also done without AI unless the instructions allow it. You can use Claude to research Anthropic, practice, and refine an application you drafted yourself.

The London, Paris and Munich FDE postings say to expect frequent travel to customer sites, 25–50% of the time; the Staff posting says 25%. Separately, Anthropic currently expects all staff in one of its offices at least 25% of the time, and some roles need more.
