OpenAI Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Questions & Process (2026)
4 min read10 practice questionsUpdated Oct 25, 2026
OpenAI's forward deployed engineer (FDE) interview follows the stages OpenAI publishes for every role: a résumé review, introductory calls, a skills-based assessment, then 4–6 hours of final interviews with 4–6 people, usually virtual. OpenAI says the assessment format varies by team and can include pair coding, a take-home project or a technical test. One FDE candidate who interviewed in May 2026 reports a one-week take-home (semantic search over Amazon products for ChatGPT), a live walkthrough of it with the team, and a separate coding screen where AI was allowed. The FDE postings tell you what the loop will probe. FDEs lead deployments of OpenAI models with its most strategic customers and own discovery, scoping, system design, the build and the production rollout. They write production code across frontend and backend and travel up to 50% of the time. The ten questions below cover that ground, each with what it checks and how to answer.

Sample OpenAI Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Questions
Cultural Fit Questions
1 question- 1
OpenAI's operating principles include "Find a way" and "Update quickly." How would those show up in the way you run a customer deployment?
What they're checking: Whether you know OpenAI's published principles and can connect them to real delivery behavior, not recite them.
“Tell me about yourself”, “Why here?” and the other common questions, and how to prep each →
Behavioral Questions
3 questions- 1
Tell me about a complex system you took from first prototype to stable production with a customer or partner team.
What they're checking: End-to-end ownership. The posting asks FDEs to "own technical delivery across multiple deployments from first prototype to stable production."
- 2
Tell me about a time you traded off scope, speed and quality to protect a delivery.
What they're checking: Judgment under delivery pressure. The posting asks you to "make trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality" and adjust plans to protect delivery.
- 3
Tell me about a time you spotted a risk early on a project and changed course without slowing the team down.
What they're checking: Risk sense and calm. The posting looks for people who "spot risks early and adjust without slowing down" and stay calm "when the stakes are high."
The six topics behind behavioral questions, and how to prep a story for each →
Product Questions
1 question- 1
You've built nearly the same integration for three customers. How would you turn it into something other FDEs can reuse?
What they're checking: Leverage beyond one account. FDEs are asked to "codify working patterns into tools, playbooks, or building blocks that others can use."
Technical Questions
3 questions- 1
In a pair-coding interview, you're asked to build a small service that takes customer documents and returns structured data using a model API. What do you build first, and how do you test it?
What they're checking: Practical coding against OpenAI's stated bar for engineering interviews: well-designed solutions, high-quality code, optimal performance and good test coverage.
- 2
Give an example where how the model behaved changed the product experience you built.
What they're checking: LLM product judgment. The posting asks for people who have built with LLMs and "understand how model behaviour affects product experience."
- 3
How would you use evals to show a deployment is working, and to give feedback that changes OpenAI's product or models?
What they're checking: The posting measures success through "production adoption, measurable workflow impact, and eval-driven feedback that changes product and model roadmaps."
System Design Questions
1 question- 1
Design a system that lets a healthcare company's staff search and summarize internal documents with an OpenAI model, reliably and securely.
SeniorWhat they're checking: Production system design in a regulated domain. OpenAI runs FDE teams for Healthcare, Legal and Financial Services, and FDEs own "system design, build, and production rollout."
System design questions grouped by the concept they test, with a full walkthrough →
Case Study Questions
1 question- 1
You're running two deployments and both customers escalate in the same week. How do you decide where your time goes?
What they're checking: Prioritization across accounts and clear communication with customer stakeholders.

Preparation Tips for OpenAI Forward Deployed Engineer Interviews
- Ask your recruiter early what the skills-based assessment is for your FDE team, since OpenAI says formats vary by team and can include pair coding, a take-home or a technical test.
- If you get a take-home, treat it as a customer engagement: one May 2026 candidate says the evaluation came down to explaining decisions and tying them back to customer needs.
- Prepare one deployment story you owned end to end, with the scoping, the trade-offs, the production rollout and a measured outcome.
- Practice coding a small full-stack feature against a model API with validation, error handling and tests, since OpenAI looks for high-quality code and good test coverage.
- Build or rehearse an eval for an LLM feature from real cases, and be ready to explain how it changed a decision.
- Read OpenAI's recent product and research updates, especially for the team you're interviewing with, as OpenAI recommends.
- Know OpenAI's published values and operating principles and have an example for at least two of them.
Frequently Asked Questions - OpenAI Forward Deployed Engineer
OpenAI's postings say FDEs "lead complex end-to-end deployments of frontier models in production alongside our most strategic customers." They own discovery, technical scoping, system design, the build and production rollout, write production code across frontend and backend, and feed field results back to Product and Research. Success is measured by production adoption, workflow impact and eval-driven feedback.
OpenAI publishes one process for all roles: a résumé review (about a week), introductory calls, a skills-based assessment, then 4–6 hours of final interviews with 4–6 people over 1–2 days, and a decision within about a week. It says the assessment varies by team and may include pair coding, a take-home or a technical test. It doesn't publish an FDE-specific version. One candidate who interviewed in May 2026 reports a one-week take-home to build semantic search over Amazon products for ChatGPT, a live discussion of that solution with the team, and an easy, AI-enabled coding screen, with the process taking about two weeks. They said "the take home was basically the job."
When checked on October 25, 2026, the FDE postings in San Francisco, Seattle and New York, including the Healthcare, Legal and Financial Services teams, listed $185K–$300K plus equity. Forward Deployed Software Engineer postings listed $153K–$325K or $185K–$325K, and Deployment Lead postings $230K–$294K, each with equity. Ask your recruiter where your level sits.
From the postings: FDEs own deployments end to end, from discovery to production. Forward Deployed Software Engineers build custom software on OpenAI's APIs alongside FDEs, design reusable abstractions, and the San Francisco posting asks for 7+ years of full-stack experience. Deployment Leads own the delivery plan across FDEs, researchers and customer engineers, plus value cases and ROI, and the posting asks for 7+ years of customer-facing delivery leadership.
Sometimes. OpenAI says some interview formats intentionally allow AI tools and others assess your problem-solving without them, and your preparation materials will say which. If you're unsure, ask your recruiter before the interview.
The FDE postings ask for production-grade code across frontend and backend in Python, JavaScript or comparable stacks, experience building or deploying systems powered by LLMs or generative models, and usually 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience that includes customer-facing work. The Healthcare and Spanish-speaking postings ask for 6+.
The FDE postings say travel up to 50% is required, or may be required on some teams, and OpenAI uses a hybrid model of 3 days a week in the office. Several postings also offer relocation assistance.
