Apple Software Engineer Interview Questions (2026) – Preparation Guide

4 min read10 practice questionsUpdated Oct 12, 2026

Apple's software engineer interview, in candidate reports, runs from a recruiter screen to one or two technical phone screens, then a virtual onsite of five or more interviews, mostly coding with a manager round and a systems or design round. Some loops end with a short conversation with the hiring manager's manager. Apple doesn't publish the process, each team runs its own, and some recruiters won't say what each round covers. Reported questions range from LeetCode-style coding to concurrency, operating-system concepts and low-level design. The ten questions below cover that ground, each with what the interviewer is checking and how to answer.

Process
Not published by Apple, and set team by team. Candidates report a recruiter screen, one or two technical screens, then a virtual onsite of five or more interviews.
Format
Phone coding in CoderPad over WebEx in one 2025 report; onsite interviews of about an hour each, mostly one-on-one. One team let a candidate choose any language.
Pay
$129,300–$225,300 base for ICT2–ICT3 software roles in Cupertino; $150,400–$277,600 for ICT3–ICT4, or $142,300–$263,300 in Seattle (checked Oct 12, 2026).
What it tests
Coding and data structures, concurrency and OS concepts, debugging, system and low-level design, and why you want this team.

The Apple Software Engineer Interview Process

What to expect at each stage of the Apple Software Engineer loop.

  1. 1

    Recruiter screen

Background and motivation. A 2025 senior candidate says this screen focused heavily on why they wanted to join Apple.

  2. 2

    Technical phone screen

    ~45 min

Coding with an engineer, from an easy LeetCode-level problem to expression parsing like Basic Calculator II, in CoderPad over WebEx. Some teams add a senior-manager call with behavioral and design questions.

  3. 3

    Virtual onsite

Five or six interviews of about an hour in most reports, mostly one-on-one with the team or an adjacent one; a coreOS candidate reports about eight. A 2025 new-grad loop had three coding rounds, a manager round, and a systems and design round on OS concepts.

  4. 4

    Senior manager conversation (some teams)

A short one-on-one with the hiring manager's manager about your projects and a difficult bug you solved, reported in 2024.

Sample Apple Software Engineer Interview Questions

Cultural Fit Questions

1 question
  1. 1

Why Apple, and why this team?
    Mid-level

What they're checking: Your motivation, which a 2025 senior candidate says the recruiter screen focused on heavily. Apple hires into specific teams, so the team half matters as much as Apple.

“Tell me about yourself”, “Why here?” and the other common questions, and how to prep each →

Behavioral Questions

2 questions
  1. 1

Tell me about the highest-impact technical project you've led. What were the key decisions and what would you do differently?
    Senior

What they're checking: Depth and judgment. Manager rounds ask about specific projects, and candidates report deep follow-ups on whatever you claim.

  2. 2

Tell me about a difficult bug you resolved. How did you find the cause?
    Mid-level

What they're checking: Debugging method. A 2024 candidate was asked about a difficult bug by the hiring manager's manager, and coreOS candidates report debugging questions.

Technical Questions

5 questions
  1. 1

Evaluate an arithmetic expression string containing +, -, * and / without using eval.
    Mid-level

What they're checking: Clean coding under time pressure. A 2025 senior candidate's phone screen in CoderPad was a problem like LeetCode's Basic Calculator II.

  2. 2

Solve a sliding-window problem, such as the longest substring without repeating characters, then optimize it.
    Mid-level

What they're checking: Whether you know the sliding-window pattern and can improve a first solution. A 2025 candidate was asked a sliding-window question with an optimized follow-up.

  3. 3

Write a circular queue class. Then make it safe to use from multiple threads.
    Mid-level

What they're checking: Data structure basics plus concurrency, which several teams' postings and candidate reports stress. A 2024 embedded candidate was asked to write a circular queue.

  4. 4

What is a deadlock, and how would you prevent one in a system you're designing?
    Mid-level

What they're checking: Concurrency fundamentals. Candidates list deadlocks among the systems questions, and the Seattle posting asks for experience with locking and atomic operations.

  5. 5

What happens when a process touches a page of memory that isn't loaded?
    Senior

What they're checking: Operating-system depth. Candidates report virtual memory and OS concepts in systems rounds, and the System Software Engineer posting asks for OS architecture knowledge.

System Design Questions

2 questions
  1. 1

Why is a fixed-window rate limiter not the best approach? Design a better one.
    Mid-level

What they're checking: Design trade-offs from first principles. A 2025 new-grad candidate's systems and design round asked this.

  2. 2

Design a feed, like Instagram's, that stays fresh and fast.
    Senior

What they're checking: End-to-end system design and trade-offs. A 2025 senior candidate was asked this in a senior-manager phone round, with no whiteboard or CoderPad.

Preparation Tips for Apple Software Engineer Interviews

  • Ask your recruiter which rounds you'll have and what each covers; teams differ and some won't say
  • Prepare coding problems and the systems side: concurrency, memory, deadlocks and OS concepts
  • Practice coding in CoderPad without an IDE, in the language your team uses
  • Prepare a specific "why Apple, why this team" answer; a senior candidate says it matters
  • Have one or two projects and a difficult bug ready to discuss in depth
  • Read the posting's requirements closely; Apple's software teams range from Rust services to OS internals

Frequently Asked Questions - Apple Software Engineer

Apple doesn't publish it, and teams run their own. Candidate reports from 2024 and 2025 describe a recruiter screen, one or two technical phone screens of about 45 minutes, then a virtual onsite of five or more interviews: mostly coding, plus a manager round and a systems or design round. Some teams add a short conversation with the hiring manager's manager.

When checked on October 12, 2026, Apple's software postings listed base pay ranges of $129,300–$225,300 for ICT2–ICT3 roles in Cupertino, and $150,400–$277,600 for ICT3–ICT4 roles in Cupertino ($142,300–$263,300 in Seattle). Senior ICT4–ICT5 postings, such as iOS Software Engineer in Customer Systems, listed $184,700–$324,800. Each range covers the posting's level band; postings add discretionary bonuses and restricted stock units.

Some teams do. Candidates report a sliding-window problem with an optimization follow-up, an expression parser like Basic Calculator II, and a circular queue class. Others don't: a candidate who interviewed with two coreOS teams describes "no meaningless LC trickery", with questions mostly on concurrency, C, debugging and low-level design. Prepare both, weighted by your team's work.

Usually the one that suits the role. An embedded candidate was told they could choose any language and used C, the team's main language. Postings vary widely: the Seattle Software Engineer team writes "entirely in modern Rust", while app teams use Swift. Ask your recruiter, then practice in the language your team uses.

Not always. One 2025 candidate's recruiter said they wouldn't disclose what each round was on, and another candidate's recruiter said this was on purpose, because dealing with ambiguity matters at Apple. Ask anyway, and prepare the common ground: coding, concurrency, system and low-level design, and behavioral stories.

It depends on the team. The System Software Engineer posting asks for OS architecture and low-level system programming (processes, IPC, signals, daemons). The Seattle posting wants concurrent programming (locking, atomics) and distributed-systems concepts like consensus and replication. The Watch Software posting asks for inter-process communication and profiling across the stack.
